This (to me) is being a good friend. Should a buddy's daughter suffer as that child suffered, of course the father would crave vengeance. But his friends, being good men, should see that justice is carried out swiftly and without revenge. In this way the father is spared from some of that darkness that - as you rightly point out - resides in all men.
