True. Though if the layoffs are spread throughout their subsidiaries. Then both the official statement and Reddit post can be true.
As at least on paper. Only a few hundred directly employed google staff got layed off. The rest were “technically” employed by subsidiaries and had different logos on their uniform. Even if for all intents and purposes they were essentially Google employees.
It’s the kinda corporate double speak that makes bad news look much better to shareholders.

If 90% of their people were contractors they are just "not retained". Layed off is actual full time employees.
