Took my wife into work today for safety sakes. It’s -45 this morning.
Saw a fellow sitting in his EV at a charging station. The businesses were still closed for him to stay warm and dawdle while his car charged.
I briefly spoke with him as he went into the store. He said he’s been sitting in the car running the heaters and it was taking about twice as long to charge. The car’s range was about 280km in the cold he said.
The fellow said his trip to Saskatoon from Kelowna takes about 3 times longer for charging time (sitting time).
His charges today were about $100 and two hours of sitting with heaters on and the battery was only 2/3 charged.
He said he liked his EV, but only in summer. But he said only if it’s not too hot, AC drains batteries very fast.
So, if you live in Canada, and are considering buying an EV, make sure your pockets are deep and you’re NEVER on a schedule. I wished him luck. His name was Jack (John) from Kelowna.
That $100 only bought him 172 miles of range. That would get him down to Calgary, where he could charge it again, but I’m not sure what happens after that. Heading west into the Rocky Mountains and he’s got a 6 hour drive to Kelowna. Fuel stations are pretty sparse, and I can’t imagine the rapid charger situation is very robust. His adventure is just starting.
It is about 200 miles between Mandan and Fargo North Dakota. That is about four hours of travel along I-94 in perfect weather. It is also double the distance between Mandan, ND and Billiings, MT which takes about 8 hours of driving. With his EV and a very cold day, I am not sure he even made it to Calgary before having to charge his car. Remember that the tweet said he had the heater running while charging.

A hundred bucks to charge the car?
Un-fuckin'-beleiveable.

It only cost me $40 to fill my ICE the other day.
My Isuzu Rodeo, fills at about $31.
My toyota Prius cost about $10.
You should put that in quotes otherwise people will think you're saying it.
And whats that battery gonna be like in 5 years?
It might not even last five months due to it catching on fire. Imagine if it happens inside the driver's garage.
