They are not out of touch we are. Look at Toronto the new mayor that was elected because the old one resigned is raising taxes by a huge amount for property owners and at the same time is giving herself a massive raise. Toronto next election will vote her in again. Same thing happened with the old mayor that resigned when he came in he raised everyones taxes then gave him and all council members massive raises yet they voted him in twice more.
