...washing, mending, working as a kitchen maid, etc were the occupations of older women, starting from the age of 20 or so who could no longer sell their favors for cash and gifts. You are being obtuse. The more common way for young women was to marry young, starting at the age of 13. And I suppose even younger back in the day.
