Welcome to General Chat - GAW Community Area
This General Chat area started off as a place for people to talk about things that are off topic, however it has quickly evolved into a community and has become an integral part of the GAW experience for many of us.
Based on its evolving needs and plenty of user feedback, we are trying to bring some order and institute some rules. Please make sure you read these rules and participate in the spirit of this community.
Rules for General Chat
-
Be respectful to each other. This is of utmost importance, and comments may be removed if deemed not respectful.
-
Avoid long drawn out arguments. This should be a place to relax, not to waste your time needlessly.
-
Personal anecdotes, puzzles, cute pics/clips - everything welcome
-
Please do not spam at the top level. If you have a lot to post each day, try and post them all together in one top level comment
-
Try keep things light. If you are bringing in deep stuff, try not to go overboard.
-
Things that are clearly on-topic for this board should be posted as a separate post and not here (except if you are new and still getting the feel of this place)
-
If you find people violating these rules, deport them rather than start a argument here.
-
Feel free to give feedback as these rules are expected to keep evoloving
In short, imagine this thread to be a local community hall where we all gather and chat daily. Please be respectful to others in the same way
I know I'm an idiot but the "wallet" app on iphone is so convenient. I have ,cc info there and to check out I just tap my phone on the CC machine. Walla!
How is it that they were able to transmit info from back of phone to the credit card machine? Does it scan the phone or how??
Your phone has an NFC chip (Near-field Communication) in it that emulates the NFC chips found on your credit/debit cards that have a similar chip. Chips in your cards, or your dog, or your Toll road pass etc, are passive and just emit a static ID when pinged, the one in your phone is active and can transmit/emulate other IDs.
It’s very convenient! I saw w video about other countries having payments tracked and they limiting access to your account. Like they do in china. I’m with a credit union but nothing is guaranteed. I think I’m going to delete it. I have cc in my phone. Wish everything wasn’t online. Everything I buy is online. I don’t use anything with toxins and that’s not available locally.
Exactly. It's so convenient to buy online, no more running around looking for stuff. When I was travelling overseas, many stores don't even accept cash anymore. Very strange new world. I see kids don't even carry wallets anymore, everything is on their phone. I still curious how they can scan directly from the phone. Is it through the phone camera lense? So baffling
When you check out look at the credit card machine you pay with. It’s on the left of credit card swiper machine. You can hold your phone over it or you card it has the chip. It was promoted as touchless but you still have to enter your pin. So that was just a scam to get people hooked. I have paid with my phone. It’s not any different than saving your card to the PC or the phone. Sure they can monitor but aren’t they monitoring anything except cash?
