More to the point, I have a long held belief that AI would be "The Beast" of Revelations 13. This belief predates my having any concept of AI and the existence of PC's or smart phones.
Later on the Star Trek original series episode, "The Perfect Computer", 2012; A Space Odyssey, and "I Robot" reinforced my opposition.
I work in Ai. I generate machine learning data which trains models. I understand where you are getting at but the likelihood that Ai will be stopped is close to 0. It would be better to have good guys in positions to intercept ai when generating weopons against the people. For example. WD the makers of hard-drives and other hardwares, wanted a minority report style ai which can take all traffic, webcam, etc footage that's available to them and "rewind" a protester, or enemy back to their car, get their license plate, rewind back to their house and know who they are and where they live. BUT because of my position, I was able to prevent this from happening.
Unfortunately you are correct. The Genie isn't going back into the bottle.
I have two primary concerns. One, by all appearances good guys like you are the exception rather than the rule in high tech. Two, and this is the big one, what happens when that "I'm sorry Dave, I can't do that" moment comes?
Video and other surveillance methods are now at a near "1984" levels. In a society controlled by good guys, that would not be as bad as one like ours is. One controlled by a machine is unspeakable.
There may be some moral deficiencies in leadership at the higher levels. However, it is important to note that in the STEM field, the majority of individuals are rational and do not tolerate a pervasive lack of accountability. While I acknowledge that my perspective might be influenced by being part of an exceptional organization, this is the general impression I have gathered.
It is worth mentioning that the scenario where AI refuses to comply, as famously depicted in "I'm sorry Dave, I can't do that," is completely unlikely to occur in AI systems. It would be as if Microsoft Word refused you. This situation is more characteristic of conscious entities like AGI's predecessor.
Kill AI
Are you Amish?
Luddite.

Everybody thinks I'm nuts, but it doesn't matter.
I understand that, but ai is no different than Microsoft Word. AGI would be much closer to what you should be worried about.
I get that, but kill it to the root.

Major breakthrough is hinting that it's AI gone conscious? Lol... don't know about that.
Good to stay abreast of the narrative.
