Welcome to General Chat - GAW Community Area
This General Chat area started off as a place for people to talk about things that are off topic, however it has quickly evolved into a community and has become an integral part of the GAW experience for many of us.
Based on its evolving needs and plenty of user feedback, we are trying to bring some order and institute some rules. Please make sure you read these rules and participate in the spirit of this community.
Rules for General Chat
-
Be respectful to each other. This is of utmost importance, and comments may be removed if deemed not respectful.
-
Avoid long drawn out arguments. This should be a place to relax, not to waste your time needlessly.
-
Personal anecdotes, puzzles, cute pics/clips - everything welcome
-
Please do not spam at the top level. If you have a lot to post each day, try and post them all together in one top level comment
-
Try keep things light. If you are bringing in deep stuff, try not to go overboard.
-
Things that are clearly on-topic for this board should be posted as a separate post and not here (except if you are new and still getting the feel of this place)
-
If you find people violating these rules, deport them rather than start a argument here.
-
Feel free to give feedback as these rules are expected to keep evoloving
In short, imagine this thread to be a local community hall where we all gather and chat daily. Please be respectful to others in the same way
Is there a decent forum that operates like Reddit but doesn’t have the Reddit type people? I probably already know the answer because since 2020 we have seen a boom in stupidity. Honestly I don’t desire to interact any where but here. I’m seeking a place with real people’s opinions on things they buy. It’s impossible to find a real review on anything with the increase of fake reviews. My one horse town doesn’t have much selection to look at before you buy. At the moment I’m looking for automatic dish soap dispenser, trash cans, storage containers and other things for the house. Small appliances, coffee machines, clothes, non toxic cleaning products, clean body products etc. two biggest retailers Amazon and Walmart can’t be trusted with reviews. I’m tired of buying stuff and have to ship back. Anyway if you know of any places to get ordinary working class people’s reviews I’d appreciate it. Even blogs with reviews are just big paid ads.
Yeah, almost all reviews are fake. We have had 5 star companies come and do crappy job. As for appliances, nothing is constructed solid these days. Everything is made of plastic material and everything is designed to break.
There is a real reason for all this. It all comes down to the fraudulent fiat financial system we are in. It intentionally keeps printing currency and devaluating the value of dollar, and hence all our net worth as well as the value earned by services and goods.
Without realising, this drives people to cut corners just to survive, to the point where we live in a world filled with cheap stuff and dont even realise we are actually slaves.
Cant wait for all this crap to end.
Absolutely! We just got a new microwave and it’s more plastic than anything else. My husband said the mounting brackets are cheap plastic. It’s bigger than the twenty year old we took out. The rotating plate is 1/3 the size of old one. Old one wasn’t broken except the bottom piece holding glass door together was broken hanging by a thread. Had to get new oven old one had been fixed by hubby a couple times and door was trying to fall off. I was scared glass was going to crash down in new stove and out two appliances. Just got granite yesterday so we have an old kitchen (1946) that looks new.

Up until 10 years ago, I just bought second hand, second hand rose, that's me, or look in the local papers that buy sell and trade, (we have a lot of those, on line, its called Front Porch Forum, Craigs list, and then we have a wonderful 60 year old print paper called the Green Mountain Trading Post. As the 2nd hand appliances bit the dust, I got a new toaster, new dishware, and bowls, baking dishes, a cast iron pizza pan, through Bezos Inc. There is a store right here in town that sells a lot of those old timey baking and pplatters, crocks etc, but its geared to tourists and the stuff is so marked up, screw em, I'm not a tourist. I have found gems in second hand stores in good shape, real retro looking appliances, but those are treasure hunting stuff. Juicers Blenders etc can be found in some local hardware places, but they are all franchised with places like Tru Value Hardware. They sell appliances at large supermarkets, and tho its a big box store, it does employ locals. I have this waffle iron I picked up for 5 bucks, it works wonderfully, heavy duty cast iron, the old electric cord is sound, but I keep my eye on it. It's from the 50's, a Sunbeam.
Finding second hand isn’t a problem. There’s a few decent thrift stores here and we go to the coast at least once a month. The thrift stores at Morehead City NC area are plentiful and really good. Any place with people over the average income and upscale income is good because they buy new stuff for the house more frequently than the average worker. My husband and I have a facebook account just for market place. Nobody here uses anything else to sell used goods. I have a fake name account with out friends and send him what I want🤣 Thirty five years ago we bought Bargain Trader every week (eastern NC book with anything from furniture, cars and beyond for sale). Then when online sales put them out of business it was Craig’s list. People don’t use it here anymore. I’m trying to research what brands are good quality. What last and what is just junk. I’m not buying something like automatic soap dispenser used. Not because I’m to good for used. Something small like that is usually thrown out or thrift because it’s not working or it’s junk. I am desperately seeking non toxic products for my house and that’s not going to be in second hand stores. Sorry for the confusion on my post. My brain doesn’t always type it as I’m hearing it in my head.
