We had to get wiring replaced in our car in a non-war zone, and we didn't think we had a rat problem...
No compost heaps, no rats in the house, but definitely one rat under the bonnet, JUST after those delicious corn-covered cables.

How dumb are the people?
That had wiring wrapped in corn fiber.
VW has had trouble with this on their vehicles, and sells a capacin infused electrical tape ( pepper infused tape!) as an aftermarket countermeasure.
