Every Christian and Jew who has studied their Bible knows this. This is the first use of the name of Israel, and Jacob was the progenitor of what became the nation of Israel after they conquered most of Canaan after the exodus. It remained this way until the civil war after the death of Solomon when the northern half was still called Israel and the southern half was called Judah, later Judes. When the Assyrians conquered and drove away the northern kingdom, the name was not used except for a few references in the New Testament until the establishment of the new Israel in 1948.
