But, since I'm a bit of a smartass, I can't help but point out that one of the perks of becoming stronger IS that life becomes easier than when you were weaker.

Good point, smartass. Maybe another upside is that those who lazily maintain a state of weakness will perish, leaving a statistically stronger nation/world that will presumably put up a stronger defense against evil in the future.
