I just recently bought a smartphone for my daughter. She's nearly 16 and just graduated junior high yesterday. I told her no FB and no TikTok. I told her that Twitter and IG are alright, as long as she does not post content of her own, or post any messages indicating her age.
I really don't use any of that shit. Is there any way possible that those 100,000 kids to be found by predators without revealing themselves online? They are safe as long as they just lurk, right?
EDIT: Great, downvote someone for asking a question. Feels like Reddit...
Bruh kids don’t need smartphones, you are literally trusting someone her with unlimited access to the new controller web
I do not live in the USA. Try telling that to the school that essentially mandates these damned things. The high school system in my country basically requires smartphones to post information about crap. I prevented her from having a smartphone up until now, but unfortunately the school system depends on them. (And no, there's no such thing as "homeschooling" in my country. The positive thing is that she was learning trigonometry in the 5th grade and there's no faggy crap in the curriculum.) I have parental filters set up, and we have family rules that will have her usage of it restricted. She can't have it in her bedroom, etc.
I found it to be useful to arm my daughter with information about what to look for, and where not to go. Every kid is different, but they're more capable of self regulation and preservation than we might think, when they've been offered information.
Thanks. I've been pretty straightforward with my daughter. I never told her that Santa Claus is real. I've told her about child trafficking. I've shown her how to spot fraudulent emails that may appear in her inbox. All she's interested in is looking at sharks, cats, and liminal space photography. I'm not at all concerned that she's going to find devious stuff; I just don't want devious people to find her.
This! One of the people I follow on Ytube was this way with their daughter. A kid from school posted on her facebook page dirty stuff and begged for a topless photo. She being informed immediately took it to her parents and the were able to contact the kids parents. She trusted her parents and they trusted her.
Aww, The school system depends on the smart phone. Nice way to track children. These people are sick.
