The thing to consider is that Russia WANTED the faces to look beaten and they want the images released so people see.

Otherwise, there are 1,000 different effective tortures or beatings they could administer that could easily be hidden by clothing... and leave no visible marks on the face.

This is clearly intended to be a message.
