My daughter lives in Marble Falls, Texas, which is ground zero for the best viewing spot for the eclipse.
Marble Falls is a little town North of Austin. If you combined it with the 3 or 4 smaller surrounding towns, they might have a combined population of 20,000 people. Marble Falls itself has only 7,500 people.
They are expecting around 300,000 people to come into the area to view the eclipse. Every hotel was booked 6-months ago. The roads weren't meant for that type of traffic. Grocery stores are warning locals to buy any food / supplies a week in advance.
Think about it like Woodstock, where a huge crowd inundates a basically rural small town area.
