I'm worried that there is going to be a huge solar flare that coincides with the period of totality, which could result in major eye damage to people viewing the eclipse. The media is always saying "the only safe time to view an eclipse is during the period of totality", but the corona emits massive UV radiation, but UV light is not visible to humans, so does not hurt to look at it. During regular eclipses, the UV light coming from the sun's corona is apparently not strong enough to cause eye damage, but I worry that this eclipse could be different. Such a UV blast during totality could result in blindness of millions? of people. I know I'm wearing my UV-protective sunglasses to watch the sun during the eclipse totality. It takes 8 minutes for the light from the sun to reach Earth, so if there was a major solar flare coinciding with the eclipse totality, there would likely not be enough time to warn people. Can you imagine the effects on the U.S. if there were suddenly 100s of thousands or even millions of blind people!
