Over the years at my "day job", I've had the pleasure of working with naturalized U.S. Citizens. A good portion of those fled their various countries due to civil war. A smaller portion fought and lost, and a few were even on the 'winning' side and then realized things were worse so got the hell out of dodge. Some saw genocide (Rwanda).
Regardless of where they are from, most of them have one thing in common: they love this country. They worked for it. They didn't sit on their refugee status. They became naturalized from an inner desire to be more, to part of something better.
And they're proud. Proud enough to fight for this country.
They know the anguish of civil war from their original homeland. And they think Americans who even mention the possibility of it happening here don't know how bad it would be.
Yes, that means me. They've said as much to me.
I work the night job during the day job. Deep conversation. Eyes and ears always open.
And what I find most unsettling? Those who fled their original country often, remark with calm resolve, how they "won't run again". How they don't want a civil war, but that if it happens they WILL fight. Because freedom is worth dying for. Because they have ownership and patriotism for this country. Because this nation, OUR country, that do many of us despair over as we've seen it go to shit - this country is still their dream.
And they will fight and die for it.
That's terrifying.
And it's a good thing.
Those who WANT civil war are on the wrong side of history.
But those who will defend freedom will be forever heroes.
