Just curious, as I have never used a scope before, how do you know (for sure) it's mounted backwards? Because the wider (in diameter) end is the far end? Or is that ribbed part for focusing and thus should be near the eye piece?

You are correct. The focusing mechanism (ribbed part) is where the eyepiece is
