It makes sense. The negative press about nixon was non stop and included his family. The Butterfield tapes provided an unattractive characterization of him and orders to take care of it and probable cause for impeachment was established.
As I mentioned, Watergate preceeded the internet and thus no Wikipedia, which was the whole purpose of my post. I didn't continue with Watergate investigations and certainly not Bob woodward.

The generations that came before only had access to curated, pre-FOIA information, and aren’t necessarily prompted to go back and revisit things.
