For minor offenses against the community that seems like a much better solution. Why should the taxpayers pay to keep someone in jail for 30 days or whatever when you can just lock him in the stocks during daylight hours for 30 consecutive days for basically free? I'm sure given the communities most of these people come from would not be places you want to be locked up in full view of.
