To be fair if he had somehow survived and continued growing a following I'm sure the Romans would have tried to kill him on their own. They just didn't have any deeper spiritual motive to want him dead.

He did survive and continues to grow a following to this very day. The Romans killed plenty of Christ's disciples. Including beheading Paul in Rome.
