The Vatican has been in serious trouble since about the 1940s, when the central bank was established, and then Vatican 2 in the 1960s. The modernists infiltrated the Vatican just like Our Lady of Good Sucess predicted in the 1500s.
I would say that the Vatican has been in trouble for much longer than that. Rodrigo Borgia was not the first, nor the last of the corruption and his own rise involved a lot of familial corruption (his uncle was also the Pope at one point before him).
