Welcome to General Chat - GAW Community Area
This General Chat area started off as a place for people to talk about things that are off topic, however it has quickly evolved into a community and has become an integral part of the GAW experience for many of us.
Based on its evolving needs and plenty of user feedback, we are trying to bring some order and institute some rules. Please make sure you read these rules and participate in the spirit of this community.
Rules for General Chat
-
Be respectful to each other. This is of utmost importance, and comments may be removed if deemed not respectful.
-
Avoid long drawn out arguments. This should be a place to relax, not to waste your time needlessly.
-
Personal anecdotes, puzzles, cute pics/clips - everything welcome
-
Please do not spam at the top level. If you have a lot to post each day, try and post them all together in one top level comment
-
Try keep things light. If you are bringing in deep stuff, try not to go overboard.
-
Things that are clearly on-topic for this board should be posted as a separate post and not here (except if you are new and still getting the feel of this place)
-
If you find people violating these rules, deport them rather than start a argument here.
-
Feel free to give feedback as these rules are expected to keep evolving
In short, imagine this thread to be a local community hall where we all gather and chat daily. Please be respectful to others in the same way
❓Question of the Day ❓
If you could live part of your life, without using any extra equipment…. Would you rather be able to travel/live in Outer Space OR the Ocean?
Ocean for sure. I've always loved beaches/oceans/islands since I was little. Most likely because I grew up in flyover country. I've been to Hawaii 5 times and love it so much, but way too expensive to live there. If they clean up California in the next 5 years I would move there.
Edit: OH, you are talking about living literally in the ocean?
Yes. Living IN the ocean. It could be full-time, it could be part-time it could be whatever you want. I think having the best of both worlds would be my choice!
I'd try it out
Neither! I just said the other day I’d never go into space and I’ve always been a daredevil. I love the ocean but over the last few years have developed an awareness or claustrophobia. If I go in a tunnel I start thinking about the thing collapsing. Not enough awareness because I keep on traveling and go in them.
Interesting answer, but being claustrophobic would definitely be an issue being underwater. I think you might feel the same way in Outer space even though it seems so wide and open. I think because we know what’s in the ocean, we have a better understanding of the risks. we really don’t know what’s in Outer space, I mean, we can imagine… But we really don’t know. Perhaps the risks would be the same in either location.
It’s hard for me to decide. If I could go to Outer space, that means I could travel around the world without having to fly Boeing. Perhaps I could visit my family in Japan, and not have an 11 hour flight. Not to mention… Being able to go to places like New Zealand or the Maldives.
But I also love the ocean so so much. However; there are many predators there. I’m not sure how you could get around, and not be at risk of getting eaten. There’s definitely a food chain in the ocean. No doubt about that. But to be able to swim around without scuba gear, and get GoPro videos would be amazing for my channel. 😂😂
Please don’t remind me of everything in the ocean. I was following the great white sharks online. I saw one very close to the eastern NC coast where I go a lot. I stopped following. Sometimes ignorance is bliss! When I was about twelve, I was circled by a shark in very shallow water at Wrightsville beach, NC. I stood completely still and waited for it to go back out to sea. I came out screaming shark, shark, shark😆 Sharks come to that area of beach more than where I go.
Speaking of living in outer space, watch TV series, The 100. It’s sorta syfy. It’s in the future when there was a nuclear war and the earth was being destroyed from the radiation. Those that didn’t build bunkers went to space to live. The kids that were born in space as adults were sent to earth to see if it was livable. It gets a little crazy in the last couple seasons. I thought it was an interesting concept of living a different way than you knew all your life. They had to learn to grow food inside under lights. Basically whatever skill you had on earth you did in space. My favorite part is when someone did crimes they were floated, let go into space. Man can you imagine if we were not taking care of all the criminals?!
I kinda like that idea…. Sending somebody often into space for their punishment. 🥰
Speaking of shark bites. I’m sure you’ve heard of Bethany Hamilton. She’s related to my family on Kauai - she actually lives next-door to one of my friends from our Bible study!

Japan seems amazing, The people really keep the streets clean and are most people there are extremely kind. I have a friend who's wife is from there and he's going there next week, I envy him! Are you from Japan?
my brother has lived in Japan for 40 years, my mom lived there for 10 years, and my daughter lived there for one year. I’ve been several times, but not for many years. I would Like to plan another trip soon.
It’s a beautiful place to visit, and it sure helps having family members to speak Japanese and know where everything is. Basically get treated like royalty. 👸
it’s one of the nicest, cleanest, societies on earth.
