I dunno, there's been some pretty big mistakes. Allowing slave traders, not repatriating all slaves after they were freed, introducing the personal income tax, creating the federal reserve, the role in WW2, allowing people with dual citizenship to hold top posts in government, the whole covid spectacle, the list goes on.
A few years ago, it seemed like a big mistake to execute a blatant in-your-face coup live on television, and then fearing the appropriate retaliation, installing their potato figurehead as president in the middle of the night behind barbed wires and military lockdown. No consequences have come from it though, at least not for them.
This most recent mistake will only have been a mistake for them if it has actual consequences. Otherwise future history books of the glorious People's Republic of America will contain a small footnote about some corrupt scandal-ridden president from the before-times losing two elections in a row and being brought to justice.
