Ronnie james dio apparently saw his grandmother do it, and thought it looked cool, so at some point when he was performing, he started doing it on stage, and it caught on.

I accept that context about Ronnie James Dio adopting the gesture from his Grandmother, I'm a little concerned about adopting that same gesture from Taylor Swift's grandfather - Anton Szandor LaVey.
