The only difference is that in the movie, the victims of the mutant virus didn't die from it.

It depends on your definition of death. Spiritual death? Yes. Physical death? Well, they mutated into hideous creatures that no longer operate as humans, so...Yes.

And the end result was that it ended the world as we know it.
