Here in New England, the manufacturing shop where I used to work had a Nationwide Union. These guys perfected the art of working as slow as possible all week so that production would slow down and management would have no choice but to pay them 1.5x overtime on the weekends to meet our committed delivery dates.
We had one union lackey rage quite after having 15+ years at the company. He had been threatening to go work someplace else that paid better. We all said "C-ya!" but he was back a month later begging for his old job back because other places didn't have better pay or union protection.
One guy that worked for me used to get harassed by his union brothers because he was TOO productive. Once the shop closed down and got liquidated, the only manufacturing guy we brought on into an office role was the guy that actually worked hard.
Did the company take the quitter back?
Yes, unfortunately they did, but he got bumped down to a lower paid position than he had before because he no longer had 15 years of seniority.
