It’s a baseball reference. In the 2nd sentence, when I start with, you walk him…, means you intentionally throw ball 4, let him get first base, so you can pitch to the next batter with a 0-0 count. Ironically, the first time I heard this joke, I heard a woman tell it, and it also appears in the movie “Hot Shots” and it’s told by a female character.
