A democracy is two wolves and a lamb deciding what's for dinner. (This is where the "tyranny of the majority" concept comes in.)
In a CONSTITUTIONAL republic - the baby lamb has rights.
The Constitution of the United States of America is the supreme law of the land. ANY law (whether it be federal, state or local) that contradicts the Constitution is REPUGNANT to the Constitution and therefore, itself illegal. (The US has many, many laws that are actually illegal laws.)
This is why it's imperative for all Americans to understand their constitutionally guaranteed rights. Note the distinction here. The Constitution doesn't give you rights. They are 'inalienable' rights that you were given by your Creator, at conception. (some would argue, birth) The Constitution merely guarantees your rights. Our founders presumed from the start that these rights were automatic, from God. And they created a form of government to guarantee you would enjoy those rights.
One of the saddest things in the history of the world is that American people were given something no other people had ever been given in the history of our world ... and they ignored it, forgot about it, took it for granted. So many Americans are absolutely clueless about the amazing document we know as the Constitution. ALL patriots should endeavor to study it, because it literally stands for the difference between life and death, slavery or freedom.

That's a beautiful explanation. Thank you.
Sad, because up into the 60s, every grade schooler knew this.
