By pushing democracy and doing things like highlighting the popular vote as if it were more important than the patchwork of local representation, they try to guilt people into giving up their rights, while simultaneously entitling / empowering those who want to override the will of others.
The (small "r") republican nature of our representation ensures that individual rights and the rights of communities are protected from the will of a faraway majority. They constantly push the idea of democracy in order to persuade people to go along with their plans of trampling over the opinions and rights of anyone who disagrees with them, and make them think it's inevitable anyway because "muh democracy."
And it works ... I know people who think the electoral college is dumb, because they don't understand anything about how it's an important check against the tyranny of the majority.
Yep I've had retards trying to guilt me that the electoral college somehow oppresses the majority. They never have a response when I point out that if they truly where the majority by a wide margin like they claim then they should have no trouble overwhelming the electoral college as well. The fact that they can't is even further proof that they're an artificially amplified group but they just keep insisting that it's because all of the people like them moved to the cities and that's why they can't flip all of the other counties.

Indeed.
You can also ask how they would plan a recount for the national popular vote, and how it wouldn't turn into a "which region cheats better" contest.
