DHS blames budget after releasing hundreds of unauthorized travelers from U.S. airport
Homeland Security let dozens of illegal immigrants walk free from an airport because it didn’t have the space to hold them until their departing flights, and nearly half of them disappeared, never returning for their scheduled departures, an inspector general said Monday.
From 2021 to 2023, Customs and Border Protection released at least 383 “inadmissible travelers” from its custody because officials didn’t have overnight detention space to hold them. Of those, 168 never returned for their outbound flights, the inspector general said.
Worse yet, CBP never issued immigration summonses to dozens of the travelers because the agency “did not have an effective process to track” those who failed to come back to the airport.
The travelers were coming to the U.S. but were deemed inadmissible when they were screened on arrival. Under those conditions, they are supposed to be put on a plane back.
CBP can either hold them at the airport for up to 72 hours for a return flight, or can ship them to ICE for a hold, or can send them to another airport that has an available flight. Or in some cases, the traveler can be released.

Is that what we're calling illegal immigrants now, unauthorized travellers?!
Will someone please make up [their] touched minds, please?
I mean we’re running into a dual issue. The entrenched interests desire to promote chaos domestically. And the fact we’ve been quite thorough in labeling other tactics that could be used as ‘Inhumane’ and ‘Cruel and Unusual’.
We’ve got the blueprints and floor plans for internment camps from WW2. We’ve got blueprints for converting decommissioned ships into Prisons. Not particularly comfortable or clean prisons. But functional prisons nonetheless.
Hell there’s god knows how many abandoned Prisons and Military posts and Army bases in this country. Many of which are still Government property. And in the case of many of the recently abandoned ones. Could be brought back to working order fairly quickly and relatively cheaply. Make a couple temporary airstrips. Or Hell bus them to waiting planes at airports under armed guard.
There’s plenty of solutions. But the powers that be benefit from the chaos. And the bleeding hearts both domestically and internationally will start whining. About some of the more pragmatic tactics that could be used to save the taxpayer money. As they by virtue of being cheaper pragmatic options. Wouldn’t necessarily result in comfortable situations for detainees. Though they get uncomfortable enough they may self-deport. Win-Win.
Didn’t have room to hold them overnight? It seems funny that when planes are delayed or flights are canceled due to weather you see pictures of hundreds and hundreds of people sleeping in the airport. My son and daughter-in-law slept in the airport for two nights when Southwest fucked up all the flights. There is room, but it’s easier to just let them go.
They think we're stupid.
