Two men who could have intervened to save his life walked by and did nothing. They walked by as a man was literally beaten within an inch of his life and did nothing. The only compassionate response to something like this is to demand that the demon be removed from society before it can strike again. It is an existential threat to all people. You kill it or it kills you.

Even if he remains technically alive, there'll be nothing recognizable as his previous self once it heals. His face will be completely destroyed and his brain has been irrevocably damaged. The way they described it, he may never make it off of the ventilator. That might actually be a mercy.
To do that to another human being, demands a response. That is what compassion calls for, compassion for the victim, and swift justice for the demon who did it.
