Pretty compelling evidence but what's the motive?

Tactically, having to cover up such a big secret seems like a lot of overhead. What benefit do the Macron's gain by doing this?

I suppose it gives legitimacy to a fake alter ego that you can hide behind in case law enforcement comes a knocking for crimes.
