Don't forget that the College of Electors is a real thing. According to the Constitution, they have complete autonomy to decide who the President and Vice President will be. The following of election ballots is only a courtesy, and if such a process is not in the Constitution it is not binding.
Technically, I have long supposed the intended process was for the citizens in each state to vote for Electors, and abide by choice of the College.
