I'm kinda afraid the US government doesn't actually have a stick big enough to do what it really wants, meaning they'd have to pull out the big guns.
And Russia has more of those (unlike during the Cold War where they had a smaller arsenal most of the time) and newer better ICBMs.
So really the world is hanging on how much patience Putin has, and he is allegedly not a very nice man. The media paints him as an insane maniac, in fact.
And the media tells the opposite of truth. Also, while Russians didn't invent chess, they dominate it.
