You don't need to compromise your principles, but I think your wife may have a point that some softening of your attitude is in order. You can pity your inlaws without denigrating them.
Always remember that in several years, this will all be over and the animosity will be gone. Pretend you are there already and rid yourself of your emotional biases. Will you be proud then of how you handled this?
