They don’t have televisions, but they know what’s going on in this country.
Do they use internet or radio? I don't know Amish
they CAN use modern technology but not own it. There are also loopholes when it comes to business.
Also for instance, they will use generators for electricity for business. They'll have cellphones in their driver's name. They'll have a van (in someone else's name) and kit it out with laptop, mobile printer, cell phone, etc. They understand computers just fine, if they need to. Around here there are a few with small engine repair business.
It all comes down to the rules for their district or whatever, the local "bishop" will dictate what is acceptable and what is not.
You can call it a cult, but when the power goes out they don't know. They are largely self sufficient with gardens, livestock, chickens, etc. Unless they are inbred, their kids are extremely healthy and strong and sharp. They work hard. All of them.
The one issue is they are taking over a nearby county. Population boom. When you have a dozen kids for generations you become a majority. They are not involved politically, they won't run for office, but they can certainly choose a Englisher candidate for local govt that supports their ideals, support him and vote for him and sway local politics.
Sort of the Muslim model.
But, I would say, they are traditional and will be supporting Trump for sure. They are going to support conservative ideals all day long and will vote when it matters, IE when they see plainly the influence of the evil left creeping into even the ultra-rural ecosystems such as the Amish communities.
Bull, they own cars, phones, electric power tools, etc. They have lawyers who will deny anything that goes against the storyline. They are also like Jews who believe that it is okay to lie to anyone not of their faith. The big difference is if you ask them the same question repeatedly that they lied to, they have to tell the truth by the 3rd time. You will see them squirming the 2nd time and that is their tell. Don't buy into the lie. I had to do child labor investigations into them and was fortunate to speak to a mother who "left" the religion. She sat with me for hours and detailed the hypocrisy of the Amish.
