Not only that, but you can't use your property as you want without getting "permission." Want backyard chickens? Nope, your property is too small, you need a permit. Want a shed? Nope, need a permit. Want a concrete slab under your deck? Nope, need a permit. Retaining wall? Permit. Finished basement? Permit. All those permits are just an extra tax, and end up raising your property taxes even more. If we're paying basically a usage tax for property we own, we should be able to do with it what we want.
Yep, I understand the reasoning behind permits, as some people can go too far, more so in built up areas, but you get some right arrogant bureaucratic enforcers whose power goes to their heads, who just say no, because they can, there needs to be some sort of system of common sense oversight.
building permits also alert the tax assessment office of any new buildings and updates to people's properties, so the assessment office can legally go on your property to assess the new value or add new value for a new building.
yes in certain places they have set up regulations on how far away from someone's property you can build a building on your own property. for instance, there was a man i know that had an old garage that needed torn down and he wanted to replace it. the old building was grandfathered in, but under the new regulations, he could not rebuild a new building there, too close to the neighbors property. so he replaced that old building one side at a time. there was no mention in that regulation that he couldn't keep maintenance up on that building. they had to let him do it.

Smart, so you do home improvements and they then want to tax you more, sick bastards!
