Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries used in everyday gadgets, electric vehicles, and to store renewable energy could be a growing source of the “forever chemicals” that pollute soil and waterways, new research suggests.
“Forever chemicals” encompass thousands of different kinds of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). For decades, they’ve been used to make products more resistant to water, stains, and heat. More recently, a particular subclass of PFAS called bis-perfluoroalkyl sulfonimides (bis-FASIs) has been used as electrolytes and binders in lithium-ion batteries.
Those bis-FASIs are now showing up in soil, sediment, water, and snow surrounding manufacturing facilities, according to research published yesterday in the journal Nature Communications. The study authors also found bis-FASIs in liquids that leached from landfills.
. . . Taken together, it points to lithium-ion batteries as a potential vector for forever chemical pollution from cradle to grave. Without taking action, it’s a problem that could grow as more pieces of our lives become all-electric — from cars to homes and buildings.
I never understood the whole freaking thing, people think they’re saving money with gas, but in five years , 10 years , they have to buy a $50,000 battery which defeats the purpose of saving the gas all those years. As far as being better for the environment fk them and their lies !
What's even better is the amount of energy it takes to harvest the materials to build those batteries is enormous and takes a huge toll on the environment that these chuckleheads do not factor. The same can be said for the energy to recharge them. I do not want the dependence on a charging station that "may" work unless some entrepreneurial metal recycler comes by with a large pair of cutters and zoink's the cable. I LOLZ when I have read about that happening. Feel bad for the folks that are impacted, but that comes with the territory. I would assume they'll come up with a solution to deter that in the future, but until then, I would be really pissed if I was traveling that that was the only game in town and some junkie grabbed it, leaving me stranded. I can see that easily happening too, some of those charging sites are remote and you would be fucked. Does the app even show if someone snagged the cable? I assume not.

We seriously need to stop the anti-electric vehicle propaganda. They're not the savior of mankind, but the technology is awesome, and they have a lot of legitimate advantages over traditional ICE cars. Also, we know that all the environmental stuff is a hoax, and I expect batteries are the same. Forever chemicals is just a scar tactic. Do you know what is a forever chemical? Water. It's just another way to say that it tends to stick around in nature. Also, everything you said about electric chargers is true about gas stations, except I can put an electric charger in my house, which is pretty cool.
I am more a fan of hybrids. One gets the electric perks, great mileage, the engine and braking recharge the battery, the range is amazing, gas stations are abundant and quick to refuel compared to charging. Can use the vehicle as an emergency generator in a natural catastrophe or SHTF event.
Plus, the US is sitting on the world's largest known gas and oil deposit. Drill that and we have the cheapest fuel anywhere.
Dont hear me wrong, I do think that they're pretty cool. I build battery packs and harvest 18650 cells to power crap, so I get the cool factor as well as the performance. What I dont dig on (new cars electric and ICE) is the control the mothership has over your shit. Do not dig that they can turn off, restrict, track allow / disallow you to charge etc...My trust of corps and government is less than zero. If I can neuter all the shit and have a stand alone vehicle that does not need to contact the mothership, I am golden and would have more interest.
Home chargers are the way to go and for around town, I get that they're a blast. I would love to have an off grid pad with a powerwall and large capacity LiFePO4 storage bank. Driven by both panels and wind generation. I will also install geothermal for conditioning the air space. I am definitely not anti electric. I am anti arrogance that has been hand in hand with these fart smelling Prius drivers.
