Miss with easiest shot - distance, wind, adrenaline etc. Though it kind-of reminds me of Peter in the Garden Mark 14:47/ Matthew 26:47ff, swung his sword but only cut off an ear - he was trying for the whole head!
When your hearts pumping and your blood is full of adrenaline it takes many many hours spent practicing to consistently get off good shots. Inexperienced hunters suffer from what outdoorsman call 'buck fever'. It is very common for less experienced shooters to pull their shots.
Now dial up the pressure on a kid that is 20 years old on a probably suicide mission to shoot a President. His heart was racing. He probably never killed anything before. His palms sweat. He can hear his heart in his ears. Breathing becomes erratic. Tough shot, lucky he hit anything.
Edit to add: This isnt as simple as shooting at a target under controlled conditions. Killing something, even just an animal, is hard without experience. I still have to fight buck fever if its a trophy Im shooting at and thats after killing over 100 deer and 10 bears and shooting nearly every day of my life for over 50 years.

I thought that too!

So how does a 20 year old get this close?
