It is possible that the assassination attempt helped, but life was great in 1984 and it would be foolhardy for any democrat to go up against a very popular President. The Democrats simply threw a sacrificial lamb in the name of Walter Mondale against Ronald Reagan. It didn't help that Mondale promised to raise taxes during his party's convention.
