Depends on what you consider "a lot". Also depends on the projectile type, FMJ vs. hollow point, frangible, etc., but the target will rarely move more than the shooter's shoulder. Physics. Depends on how much force is tranferred to the standing object, which is directly related to how 'tough' the target is.
Thus a metal plate will get moved a lot, cardboard would not, etc.
