Simple: Your job is to ensure the safety of Presidents and ex-Presidents and to prevent assassination attempts before they happen. Did you prevent an assassination attempt? No. You should take two weeks off than quit, you failed. You don't get reprieve or pity because the assassination attempt failed. You failed your #1 job requirement.
