Wouldn't that be considered a "straw purchase" and therefore illegal? Arrest the father! Anyone 18 and older can do their own purchase of a rifle as long as they can pass the NICS. So, dad, why didn't your son do his own NICS paperwork?
Buying a firearm as a gift is not a "straw purchase" and is perfectly legal.
When my daughter turned 18, I gave her the money to buy the scary black rifle of her choice as a gift. And I went with her to the gun store but she did her own NICS
Not everyone does it the way you did. Many people are gifted old rifles from their grandparents and whatnot. Zero need to include the government and fees, for a family passing down an heirloom.
But dad bought it for him. I've given my daughter a rifle that had been in the family and fortunately I live in a state that doesn't care if family members give each other firearms. I'm just suspicious that dad the mental health specialist knew his son wouldn't pass NICS.
