Such an incredibly beautiful and emotional song. I didn't know what the lyrics were or what they meant in English, but they sounded like a desperate longing and proclamation of deep love for someone you were unable to be with. So I looked up the lyrics and the story behind them.
The Opera is about an unknown prince who falls in love at first sight with a princess who is cold and cruel and uninterested in him. She has demanded that all suitors who wish to marry her solve 3 riddles. If one solves it, he can marry her but if he fails, she will behead him. Suitor after suitor tries, fails and is beheaded.
The unknown prince solves all 3. Unfortunately the princess is repelled by his looks and wants nothing to do with him. So he gives her one last chance to rebuff him. He gives her until the morning to guess his name and if she does, she won't have to marry him. If she doesn't, she will have to submit to him.
She commands all her servants to discover his name or be killed by the morning. The prince watches the night progress with no one figuring out his name.
He hears the servants shout that no one is allowed to sleep until his name is known.
-NESSUM DORMA translates to “No one sleeps!”
The servants also cry out that they are all going to die in the morning!
The prince urges the dawn to hurry and come so he can marry her, press his mouth on hers and possess her!
He shouts, "Vanish oh night. Fade, you stars. I will win! I will win! I will win!" ~~~
The song is so powerful and it sounds like it is the case of two lovers who cannot wait to be with each other if not for distance or insurmountable odds. But it is not that at all! It is a woman who hates men who wants nothing to do with any, and especially not him, but will have to submit to his advances and marry him when she is repelled. And he is excited about that! Yeesh.
