Dude...TOTALLY kidding, but someone posted that last week in a post where somebody did a deep dive on something. I was flabbergasted and dumbfounded.
It's amazing to me because it REALLY WASN'T too much to read for any normal adult - 3 minutes tops maybe? Then it dawned on me....this person's brain has been ruined by social media - frantic swiping/liking/watching so they don't "miss anything" - like a fiend "vacuuming up" as much WORTHLESS information as quickly as possible...Maybe "worthless" wasn't the right word...Is there a word when it comes to mental processes that is akin to negative calories in the dietary sense? (Negative calories....It takes more energy/nutrients from your body to eliminate said food item, than it gave the body nutritionally)
So I was thinking....the guy who thought that it was TLDR - must be completely incapable of deep thought and understanding complex ideas. It takes words and "real estate" to convey certain concepts and ideas precisely and in the way the author wishes to portray them. It's incredible that people think that every thought or idea SURELY must be able to be expressed in only 140 characters - we can thank social media again for that bs...
Imagine seeing how lost everyone was before social media and the relentless monkey button pushing to get a treat (serotonin) - It literally turns them into junkies...Now it's even worse by far. Plus the blind leading the blind and people being rewarded for sheet stupidity. I recently saw a woman, in all seriousness, who was all proud of her cooking prowess - telling people how to make mac and cheese using Utz cheese balls that were dumped into boiling water....See where I'm going with this? - So retards garner all this "cred", see no harm in their folly, and similarly retarded (or just inexperienced young mothers) wind up following her "popular recipe"...and of course, nobody sees any problem with this whatsoever. When Idiocracy meets the real world...
Of course I was aware of the problem before, but I didn't really fathom the breadth and the depth. I didn't see how it was impacting my children beyond just a 'gut instinct' that it was bad somehow.
the implications are, fucked.....
It's not just a metaphor, it's a physical effect on the brain, this is what I've suddenly realised. We will probably literally start to see a decline in global IQ if this continues, in a literal, measurable way.
It's interesting, though, all activities are either 'passive' or 'active' in nature.
It's not that passivity is inherently 'wrong' or 'evil',
Fishing is largely passive,
it's more that within passivity lies the potential for manipulation by 'bad actor's that have 'created' the content that people consume. Mindless consumption is very, very dangerous as long as there exist the possibility of these 'bad actors' at the helm
I would say that the answer is to turn off the smart phone and study chess, for example
and yet even in that, people have been consumed and become empty husks of men in the pursuit of chess greatness.
Balance is very simple, but very hard to achieve.
Yeah well, "global IQ"... average is supposed to be 100. I wouldn't be surprised if that's around 85 now.
Good Parenting, which includes morality, not spoiling them so they learn how to survive and critical thinking - let's them coast through govt school with their brains intact... because they can see how stupid their cohorts are... and not make dumb choices...or rather, as many dumb choices.
it seems very easy to 'switch off' from parental responsibility, because as you are alluding to, school acts as babysitter and parent, and it's very easy to just let it all coast on by.
Sorry TLDR....

One of the best lines to come out of satanic Harry Potter:
That could be applicable on a daily basis in clown world.
