"Ability" was the excuse given for casting Idris Elba as the Norse god Heimdall.

Kenneth Branagh: "If you have a chance to have a great actor in the part, everything else is irrelevant."

Idris Elba is a great actor. But he's black. Not looking in any way Norse.

Furthermore--and this next quote is taken from actual Norse Eddas--Heimdall was described as the "whitest of all the gods."
