Part of me likes this, but it seems cruel and unusual. It's only a matter of time before the punishment is applied to someone who was wrongly convicted.

I agree. I heard someone say yesterday that it reminds them of sharia law ….that is…cut the hand off of a thief. I’m not a fan. Just lock them up for life with no chance at all for parole.
