Its was inevitable. The current monetary system is based on debt growing exponentially. The problem is that the universe is finite. I once saw a mathematical proof that claimed that even if tomorrow humans discovered how to travel faster than light and could send colony ships to the entire galaxy it would still not be enough to get out from under the debt our current monetary system has run up.
