I'm starting to become terribly fearful that people - all of us, all around the world - have completely lost the balls & spine to do what the Declaration of Independence literally enshrines as our right; to lay waste to tyrants and a tyrannical government and secure our freedoms & liberties.

5.56 / AR-15 is absolutley, hands down the greatest home & self defense platform, for many, many reasons. ESPECIALLY over a shotgun.
That said;
5.56 allows for faster follow up shots vs. .308 & will stll zip through all but the heaviest plates.
Anything worth shooting once, is worth shooting multiple times.
Esp. invaders wearing body armor.
So the only answer is;
Both.
Keep BOTH an AR-10 and AR-15 for home defense. Ensure your wife / spouse is armed & any children who are of age too; at least 10-12. There are many stories of children under 16 successfully defending their homes & lives with firearms, and almost anyone of any age & strength could successfully wield an AR15.
