It's bad because it almost guarantees that the person that "wins" the election is not the person with the most votes. They just shift votes to a less-favorite candidate. Many of us Alaskans can't wait to get rid of it!
Jesus. They say people were getting confused with the instructions? Its pretty simple. Are people that stupid?
"In Alaska’s 2022 congressional special election, Republican candidates received 60 percent of the vote in the first round, but the Democrat won. Nearly 15,000 were trashed, and the Democrat won by a little more than 5,000 votes."
This doesn't make any sense unless Alaska didn't have a runoff election after the first round votes were counted. It sounds to me like most of the priblem is just election cheating and RCV is a scapegoat
It's because if you don't reach percentage of the vote, you don't win.. even with most votes, so then the person with least votes is given to winner.. and on and on.. it's basically an averages system.
In Maine’s 2018 Second Congressional District election, more than 8,000 ballots were thrown in the trash. Bruce Poliquin (R) received 46.33 percent of the vote ahead of Jared Golden’s (D) 45.58 percent. But since Poliquin didn’t receive 50 percent, there was a second round of tabulation. The secretary of state threw out more than 8,000 ballots and Golden was declared the winner—but with only 49.2 percent of the total ballots cast.
In Alaska’s 2022 congressional special election, Republican candidates received 60 percent of the vote in the first round, but the Democrat won. Nearly 15,000 were trashed, and the Democrat won by a little more than 5,000 votes.
So what is the problem here? That the sec of state in Maine threw out votes? Did he do it because people didn't follow instructions and voted for one candidate?
And in Alaska this doesn't make sense. There's a second voting round that should take place beyween the Repub and Dem candidate. Like Louisiana. Yea?
No, we vote first in primary for 1 candidate only.. and it is Everyone on there, I, U, AIP, R, D.
Then after that in another election,, we have to rank.. so, I, 2, 3, 4. for example, of the top candidates who made it through.
Then it starts going by percentages as well as votes.
So, say I choose candidate A as my number 1, candidate C as my number 2, candidate B as my number 3 and candidate D as my number 4. (Please note that I don't necessarily WANT candidate B,C or D, but I HAVE to rank them or my vote is thrown out, Ok.)
So, anyway, candidate C got the least votes, so they're cut and votes "recalculated". (As long as no candidate gets over 50%+1) (Not the most votes)
Then next "round" is recalculation.
And on and on..
Problems:
This is in direct conflict with the principle of "one person, one vote". Because it recalculated votes each round, it gives some voters multiple opportunities to choose a winner. They are averaging and playing percentages.. They can get more than one candidate in there for a party, giving them an unfair advantage/percentage.
Some votes simply won't count. They're "exhausted". The voter either under-voted, over-voted or chose only candidates that didn't get advanced to further rounds of voting. It's estimated that approx 10% of votes get tossed.
You have no idea.. yes, it's not rocket science, but it can be confusing, time consuming and does affect people's willingness to vote!
It can delay the voting process itself and the tabulation process can go into overtime.
Also, YES, there is corruption here, just like everywhere. This is just another tool in their box.
Alaska has a Democrat mayor in the largest city Anchorage, the two senators are rinos, the Republicans party is rinos, the states union such as teachers, state union, cities unions, Ibew, the plumbers union all democrats, and most of all the elections officials are pro democratic, guess what rank voting is rigged. Thank you Don Young republican congressman that died leaving his seat open and allowed a Democrat in via rank voting, also 2020 elections with all the mail in ballots from out of state gave us rank voting. Sorry Alaska , your citizens are lazy and most of all ignorant. I’ve live here 50 years. It’s turning to a blue state
We have corruption out the wazoo. Murky should never have won and had some villages 100% votes allegedly.. possibly even some graveyard votes. Even in smaller things, like Utility elections, they are messing around. Re-districting, won't give walk lists to certain candidates, slow or no info, Dems switching to Rep days before election paperwork is due (flying under false colors).
Universities and a lot of Gov workers bring in liberals, too. We have outside interference.. dark money, hired petition people from out of state pushing agendas promoted decievingly.. etc.
Also, Alaska tends to be a few years behind the states and some are just now starting to wake up to what the lower 48 has seen 2-3 years ago.
We have it all. Lol
This isn't alogical answer for why RCV is bad. It sounds like all Alaaskas election institution is corrupt. What makes you think reverting to standard will change it? They still have primaries they will rig
Please, Please, Please 🙏
...rank voting is male bovine excrement...
It is going to be on the Nov 5th ballot! So happy and worried! We still have a lot of lefty idiots! Every pray for us please!
Another dem deceit bites the dust.
Explain why RCV is bad. It seems good on paper

So you're concerned they put up a bunch of patsies that split the vote? Pretty sure Louisiana has a similar RCV runoff and theirs is fine
Then they can have it. We want ours GONE. https://www.heritage.org/election-integrity/report/ranked-choice-voting-bad-choice
It stinks, it's unfair and they cheated to get it installed. Why do you think darkmoney, out of state interests and Dems pushed for it?!

I'd like to know too.
Here's a decent article on it.

Good explanation! Thanks

Explain to me how being on the ballot will stop it this year? If it fails the vote it won't take effect until the next election, right?
It won't stop it for this year, but progress is progress
